Raport - sezon bez ogórków - 9 lipca 2025

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

In the second episode of "Off-Season," we talk about what all people in the world have in common—music. Our hero today was born in Damascus, where he received his musical education. He became a performer and composer, and when the civil war was already underway, he came to Poland. In Krakow, he created a choir of non-professionals, which "after hours" is a group of good friends. And when Bashar al-Assad's regime fell in Syria, he visited Damascus, his hometown, for the first time in over a decade. We talk about the sounds of Syria, whether Poles can sing, and music that can connect very different people. Raport o książkach – literatura Globalnego Południa.

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

In this holiday episode of "Book Report", we visited the 7 Sides of the World Festival in Łowicz Wałecki, and there, among the West Pomeranian lakes and forests, we talked about whether reading is a form of perfect travel - because it is unrestricted by any limitations: neither time nor space. Is literature an antidote to information overload? How to choose readings to better understand the increasingly chaotic world we live in? And finally - can literature be found - or should it be? - outside of books? The guests are experts on three regions of the Global South: South Asia, Africa and Latin America. Poland introduces border controls with Germany and Lithuania. Prime Minister Tusk explains that the reason is Germany's refusal to admit migrants. Do statistics confirm any significant changes in migrant movement at Poland's borders? And what will the EU's migration policy look like after Denmark takes over the community's presidency? In Serbia, violent clashes between police and demonstrators in another installment of anti-government protests that have been ongoing since November. Raport - sezon pozakonserwowy - 2 lipca 2025

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

We start the off-season with a meeting with an outstanding director whose latest film ostensibly tells about the 20th century through the history of trains. But it is not a film about technology, about overcoming space, or about fascinating journeys and views behind the glass. It is a film about man in the 20th century — a great metaphor for human fate, told in the form of a film symphony, composed of archival materials, moving music and reconstructed sounds. The film we will talk about today is a great affirmation of artistic freedom, and the message that flows from it is not pleasant and optimistic, but extremely moving. And we will talk not only about "Trains" - but also about other films of our guest, because there is a lot to talk about. *---------------------------------------------* Report on the State of the World is a program that exists thanks to our Patrons, join the collection ➡️ https://patronite.pl/DariuszRosiak Subscribe to the Report on the State of the World newsletter ➡️ https://dariuszrosiak.substack.com Report shirts and mugs ➡️ https://patronite-sklep.pl/kolekcja/raport-o-stanie-swiata/ [Self-promotion]

Marcin Kowalczyk. I cried at "You Are God".

From WojewódzkiKędzierski

In this episode, Kuba Wojewódzki and Piotr Kędzierski talk to Marcin Kowalczyk – an actor who gained huge recognition for his role as Magik in the film You Are God, and yet still emphasizes that he is still not seeking the limelight. We talk about sensitivity in the profession, the price paid for truth on the screen, and what acting education looks like in Poland, and what it looks like… in his version. As he says about himself: he doesn't let anyone pull the wool over his eyes, but apart from that - working with him is poetry. When did he feel like a real actor? Which of his films does he consider his opus magnum so far? Why did he have javelin lessons? What was his path to Hollywood like and why did he take offense at a certain elegant lady during it? Marcin Kowalczyk also talks about his dream of playing Czesław Niemen, recalls what he heard from Fokus when he played the role of Magik, and explains what acting is to him. Studium przypadku – Raport o książce, Graeme Macrae Burnet.

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

„If the therapy process is an attempt to discover something about yourself, then writing is undoubtedly therapy," says Graeme Macrae Burnet, guest of this episode of Report on Books. His novel "Case Study" is the story of a patient and a psychiatrist. Except that the patient is not who she claims to be, and she does not come to therapy to solve her life problems, but to uncover the secret of her sister's suicide. The psychiatrist is also cheating. And all this happens in London in the 1960s – a city pulsating with the desire for freedom, art, fashion and new ideas. - Can you escape who you were and become a new person? - Or are we forever bound to our original "self"? - Who defines madness? - Are mental illnesses unchanging medical phenomena, or fluid social constructs? These are some of the most important questions that the Scottish writer poses in his novel. At NATO summit in The Hague, member states pledged to increase defense spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035. The summit's final declaration reaffirms commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, stating an attack on one NATO member is an attack on the entire Alliance. What does this mean? The declaration mentions the threat from Russia and reaffirms Alliance support for Ukraine. How to assess the summit's results, overshadowed by Donald Trump's declared success of US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities? What future awaits the Alliance, and does the concept of collective defense under American leadership still make sense? In Armenia, a sharp dispute continues between the prime minister and the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church – an institution that has been a symbol of the nation and a carrier of its traditions for centuries. What is this conflict about, and why could it have a concrete impact on the country's future? A 33-year-old Muslim of Indian origin wins the Democratic Party nomination in the New York mayoral election. Will Zohran Mamdani be the Democrats' answer to Donald Trump's political success? In Ukraine, Russia not only kills people and bombs material infrastructure, but also tries to destroy the country's culture. What does defending their own culture mean for Ukrainians today? What role do people who protect it play in this war? In Saudi Arabia, one of the world's most spectacular museums will soon open. Report for today - June 25, 2025

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

Since Tuesday, a truce has held between Israel and Iran. After the American bombing of Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday and the Iranian attack on an American base in Qatar, President Trump called on both sides to cease operations. Following Tuesday's exchange of fire and Trump's intervention, in which he accused both sides of violating the truce – especially openly criticizing Israel – both sides have refrained from resuming attacks until this morning. President Trump announced the end of the 12-day war and stated that Iran would never rebuild its nuclear program. However, according to Pentagon sources quoted by American media, the strike did not destroy the Iranian program – at most, it delayed it by several months. In Israel, pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Netanyahu to reach an agreement with Hamas and secure the release of the remaining hostages. In Iran, authorities are tightening surveillance of political opponents after the spectacular failure of the services in connection with the Israeli attack two weeks ago. Will the regime in Iran survive? Is the country's nuclear program completely destroyed – as Trump and Netanyahu claim – or is the country able to continue enriching uranium? President Trump emerges from this confrontation strengthened – how will he use it in the Middle East and in relations with allies? Guest: Jerzy Haszczyński

Prof. Markowski. Why did the boy from the projects win against the young master from Warsaw?

From WojewódzkiKędzierski

Rozmawiamy z prof. Radosławem Markowskim – politologiem, komentatorem sceny politycznej i bezlitosnym demaskatorem mitów o demokracji.

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

Elif Shafak - one of the most important writers of her generation, the most widely read author of Turkish origin - is the protagonist of this episode of Report on Books. For several years she has lived in Great Britain, and it was there, in the heart of Kensington Gardens in London, that we talked about her new novel entitled "There are Rivers in the Sky". It is a story intertwining the fates of three characters, two rivers (one is the Thames, the other the Tigris) and an ancient poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh. All these elements are connected by one tiny drop of water - says Elif Shafak and reveals that the idea for the novel began with the question: "Can you see the universe in a drop of water?" The famous British-Turkish novelist will talk about why she decided to write in English, who the ancient Mesopotamian goddess - patron of writers - Nisaba was, what it feels like to stand in front of a thousands-year-old lamassu statue, and how rebellion and empathy underlie literature. From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

There is an exchange of fire between Israel and Iran. Iranians are shelling Israeli cities with missiles, while Israelis have taken virtually full control of Iranian airspace and are attacking targets and individuals associated with the country's nuclear program. According to American media, President Trump is considering the possibility of joining American troops in attacks on Iran - a meeting on this matter was held in the White House on Tuesday. In recent days, American aerial refueling planes have been moved to Europe, and fighter jets from Europe have been moved to the Middle East region. The presence of American warships in the Mediterranean Sea has also been strengthened. Is America's joining Israel's war with Iran only a matter of time? What would such a development change? What is the goal of the Israeli operation - does it involve a change of power in Iran? And how does the attack on Iran affect Israel's war in Gaza? Tomasz Fornal. Sport loves rascals.

From WojewódzkiKędzierski

Does sport really like rascals? Tomasz Fornal is one of the most charismatic Polish volleyball players of the young generation, there is no doubt about that. In a conversation with Wojewódzki and Kędzierski, he talks about adrenaline, pressure, fame, but also about family, defeats and... intimate contacts before the match (or rather the lack thereof). Which of his quotes hangs on the wall of fame? What would he do if he didn't play volleyball? Can he enjoy bronze? Tomasz Fornal honestly talks about whether jealousy between brothers is inevitable and recalls his father, who in his childhood was more of a harsh critic than a fan. He also reveals what he thinks about the fact that some girls "want to live at the expense of their partner" and whether he would take Bartek Kurek on a date with Kendall Jenner. What fascinates him about games and e-sports, what rituals do volleyball players have, would he like to go to the ring someday and... will he promise us gold for September? Raport o książkach – „James” Percivala Everetta

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

„Writing and reading are the most subversive act we can imagine,” says the protagonist of today's episode, Percival Everett, author of the acclaimed novel "James." "James" is a contemporary interpretation of Mark Twain's famous novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." What distinguishes it from the original is the narrator, who in Everett's version is a black slave - because in this story, the path to freedom leads through language. And if anyone listened to the previous episode of Report on Books devoted to the Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o, this thought may sound familiar. Percival Everett's "James" is – after Barbara Kingsolver's "Demon Copperhead" – another Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that fits into the "retelling" trend, which consists of retelling classic literary works. After all, literature is a dialogue between the past and the present. From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

Israel attacked Iran in massive air strikes on nuclear facilities, military bases, scientists' homes, and residential areas in Tehran and other cities. Israelis claim it's a preemptive strike; Iran was about to produce nine atomic bombs. Attacks killed the Revolutionary Guard commander, army chief of staff, and several high-ranking nuclear scientists. Iran responded by launching a hundred drones towards Israel. Israeli sources say all were intercepted before entering Israeli airspace. President Trump said he was forewarned but the US isn't involved. How do Friday's events affect the region? Will Iran's nuclear program talks continue? What will be the scale of Iran's military response, not only to Israel, but also to the United States? In Colombia, an assassination of a presidential candidate, then a wave of violence in Cali, former headquarters of a drug cartel. What did the return to "Rodzinka" look like, and how does she remember the beginnings? We also talk about her growing up on a housing estate, the time when she washed windows at an elderly lady's house, and whether she is afraid of scenes worthy of a stuntman. Why didn't Smarzowski want her in his films? What did Patryk Vega advise her? Is it true that "no one wanted to undress her" in movies? What scenes in "Gierek" did not appear, even though she cared about them? Did she break up with Hanka Mostowiak too late? Raport o książkach - Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o.

From Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka

Colonialism is not only a political process, but above all a psychological and cultural one. To achieve full freedom, it is not enough to obtain state sovereignty, but "decolonization of the mind" is necessary - said the hero of this episode, the outstanding Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. He put this idea into practice and at the height of his literary career he abandoned English and began writing his books in his native Kikuyu language. With this gesture, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o wanted to show that the key to a strong African identity - both political and cultural - is indigenous languages, because only in them can one write about freedom and dignity. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o did not manage to get the Nobel Prize in Literature, which his devoted readers had been waiting for for the last decades. He died at the age of 87. Why have so few African writers followed in the footsteps of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o? And what remains of his message today?
