Raport o książce: „Ścieżki Północy” Richarda Flanagana.
Richard Flanagan, one of the greatest novelists of our time, is the guest on this episode of Book Report. He was born in a small village in Tasmania, his grandparents were illiterate, and his father was the first person in the family to go to high school. Richard Flanagan dedicated one of his most beautiful novels, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, to his father. It tells the story of a forgotten war crime, the construction of the Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, on the orders of the Japanese Emperor. A quarter of a million slaves, mainly from Asia, worked on it, but there were also prisoners of war from Australia. Between 110,000 and 150,000 people died. Richard Flanagan's father was one of the strongest who survived. Years later, he never mentioned the cruelty of the guards, but the goodness and humanity of his fellow prisoners. "In the camp I saw the best in people," he told his children. Flanagan wrote The Narrow Road to the Deep North for 12 years: "At one point I was doomed to write this novel, or at least it seemed that way to me. I came to the conclusion that if I didn't finish it, I wouldn't be able to write anything else in my life," he says in the conversation, which we invite you to listen to.
