From occupation prisons to news making.
My guest on this episode is a veteran of Arab journalism, one of the first to work in news channels. He spent half of his professional life in harsh confrontations in the field, and the other half in the editing room. My guest is Nabil Al-Khatib, a Palestinian journalist and media figure, and the general manager of Al Sharq News. Al-Khatib was born in Hebron and lived through the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. He says that a third of the males in the West Bank have spent time in prison because of the occupation, and my guest was one of them when he was arrested at the age of fifteen. He describes it as a harsh experience, but it reshaped his awareness and understanding of things, and then pushed him to study journalism. He studied journalism in Russia, and although the reality of journalistic work disappointed him after graduation, the opportunity to work as a correspondent came at an important moment of political transformation. It was temporary work at MBC, and it lasted for a quarter of a century. Al-Khatib talks about his work as a correspondent, the difficult situations he went through, his field coverage of the events in his country, the kidnapping and attempted assassination of his colleagues, and the behind-the-scenes of newsrooms in difficult days. I asked him about the change in journalism today, how he sees its future with rapid transformations, and whether it is useful for the wave of television channels to continue. Al-Khatib believes that the problem lies in the connection of Arab institutions to a decision-maker who does not distinguish between what is useful and what is not. Most of them are suffering today due to media economics, property rights, and algorithms, which today constitute the dividing line between Arab and Western media. --- • Newsletter from Munya Abdul Rahman Abu Malih and the Finjan team, for the close audience of the podcast. • Follow the Saudi championships and other original content on the Thmanyah application. • Download the "Radio Thmanyah" application. • Discover the most beautiful places in the Kingdom from the Places newsletter. • Watch the podcast "What Were We Saying" on Radio Thmanyah. • The leading digital group in the Middle East. • "Sabil" is a national group that provides integrated logistics and geospatial solutions. • Safa Investment, upscale residential solutions that meet your needs and exceed your expectations. • "Al-Mousa Rehabilitation Hospital" is your destination for treating and rehabilitating your injuries with the highest medical efficiency. • Whether you are a fan of coffee prepared by professional makers or prefer to prepare it at home.
