Why it's so hard to find a public toilet

From Planet Money

Why is it so hard to find a bathroom when you need one? In the U.S., we used to have lots of publicly accessible toilets. But many had locks on the doors and you had to put in a coin to use them. Pay toilets created a system of haves and have nots when it came to bathroom access. So in the 60s, movements sprung up to ban pay toilets.Problem is: when the pay toilets went away, so too did many free public toilets. Today on the show, how toilets exist in a legal and economic netherworld; they're not quite a public good, not quite a problem the free market can solve. Why we're stuck, needing to go, with nowhere to go.This episode was produced by Willa Rubin with help from James Sneed. It was edited by Marianne McCune and engineered by Cena Loffredo. It was fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. A Tariff Loophole Just Closed. What That Means for Online Shopping.

From The Journal

A little-known trade provision is ending, and it will likely upend business for e-commerce companies and raise prices for consumers. De minimis has allowed companies to avoid duties on shipments to the U.S. that are worth $800 or less. It’s a program that many companies, especially e-commerce giants, Shein and Temu, have taken advantage of to keep prices low. WSJ’s Shen Lu explains how President Donald Trump has now ended that program for products from China and Hong Kong. We also speak with the CFO of shoe company Kuru about how the new rules could change their business. ⚡️The Rise and Fall of the Vector DB Category

From Latent Space: The AI Engineer Podcast

Note from your hosts: we were off this week for ICLR and RSA! This week we’re bringing you one of the top episodes from our lightning podcast series, the shorter format, Youtube-only side podcast we do for breaking news and faster turnaround. Please support our work on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWEAb1SXhjlc5qgVK4NgehdCzMYCwZtiB The explosion of embedding-based applications created a new challenge: efficiently storing, indexing, and searching these high-dimensional vectors at scale. This gap gave rise to the vector database category, with companies like Pinecone leading the charge in 2022-2023 by defining specialized infrastructure for vector operations. The category saw explosive growth following ChatGPT's launch in late 2022, as developers rushed to build AI applications using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This surge was partly driven by a widespread misconception that embedding-based similarity search was the only viable method for retrieving context for LLMs!!! The resulting "vector database gold rush" saw massive investment and attention directed toward vector search infrastructure, even though traditional information retrieval techniques remained equally valuable for many RAG applications. https://x.com/jobergum/status/1872923872007217309 Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Trondheim and Background 03:03 The Rise and Fall of Vector Databases 06:08 Convergence of Search Technologies 09:04 Embeddings and Their Importance 12:03 Building Effective Search Systems 15:00 RAG Applications and Recommendations 17:55 The Role of Knowledge Graphs 20:49 Future of Embedding Models and Innovations

Why AI is our ultimate test and greatest invitation | Tristan Harris

From TED Talks Daily

Technologist Tristan Harris has an urgent question: What if the way we’re deploying the world’s most powerful technology — artificial intelligence — isn’t inevitable, but a choice? In this eye-opening talk, he calls on us to learn from the mistakes of social media’s catastrophic rollout and confront the predictable dangers of reckless AI development, offering a “narrow path” where power is matched with responsibility, foresight and wisdom. From Huberman Lab

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how your sense of smell (olfaction), taste, and chemical sensing influence memory, alertness, focus, and even communication between people. I explain how these senses help us detect chemicals in the environment and respond to a variety of environmental cues. I discuss the connection between the olfactory system and cognitive performance, and I provide practical tools to enhance learning, sensory function, and brain health. Additionally, I examine how chemical signals exchanged between people subtly influence emotions, biology, and social bonds.
