World Status Report - June 28, 2025
From 🇵🇱 Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka, published at 2025-06-28 07:00
At NATO summit in The Hague, member states pledged to increase defense spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035. The summit's final declaration reaffirms commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, stating an attack on one NATO member is an attack on the entire Alliance. What does this mean? The declaration mentions the threat from Russia and reaffirms Alliance support for Ukraine. How to assess the summit's results, overshadowed by Donald Trump's declared success of US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities? What future awaits the Alliance, and does the concept of collective defense under American leadership still make sense? In Armenia, a sharp dispute continues between the prime minister and the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church – an institution that has been a symbol of the nation and a carrier of its traditions for centuries. What is this conflict about, and why could it have a concrete impact on the country's future? A 33-year-old Muslim of Indian origin wins the Democratic Party nomination in the New York mayoral election. Will Zohran Mamdani be the Democrats' answer to Donald Trump's political success? In Ukraine, Russia not only kills people and bombs material infrastructure, but also tries to destroy the country's culture. What does defending their own culture mean for Ukrainians today? What role do people who protect it play in this war? In Saudi Arabia, one of the world's most spectacular museums will soon open. It is to exhibit a mysterious work attributed to Leonardo da Vinci — Salvator Mundi, purchased a few years ago by the Saudi Crown Prince. How did Salvator Mundi end up in Riyadh? 在阶级固化中挣扎的小镇做题家(下)
From 🇸🇬 不明白播客, published at 2025-06-27 23:00
Since the 1980s, over 800 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. Hundreds of millions have moved from rural areas to cities, and tens of millions have become the first college students in their families. For many, it was an era full of opportunities for upward mobility. However, in recent years, with the economic slowdown, this channel for upward mobility has become increasingly narrow. We asked our listeners to submit stories of "feeling anxious about class solidification." In the previous episode, we heard two middle-aged people share how their lives struggled with the ups and downs of the economic situation. The three narrators in this episode are all born in the 90s. Boris saved money after working for 6 years to study for a postgraduate degree in Hong Kong. He wanted to get rid of the regret of his first academic qualification, but found that he had to face a more difficult employment environment than when he graduated from undergraduate. Liang, a student studying for a doctorate in Japan, calls himself an extreme case of social mobility. Josh, who graduated from a 211 university, like many young people, feels confused about his major, work, and future. What are their stories? How did the "small-town exam takers" who once firmly believed in "education changes destiny" reinterpret this sentence in the process of growing up? How do they view their situation? How to redefine "effort" and "hope"? We also have to think about where society will go if a generation of young people lose hope for the future? In addition, almost all of the letters collected this time came from male listeners. In the future, we look forward to hearing more voices from women. When Trump met crypto
From 🇺🇸 Planet Money, published at 2025-06-27 22:39
In 2019, President Trump tweeted: "I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies." Today, the Trumps are all over crypto. There are memecoins for Trump and the first lady. They own a stablecoin, a bitcoin mining operation, and a crypto financial services company. And, at the Bitcoin 2025 conference, Trump's media group announced they're raising 2.5 billion dollars from investors to buy bitcoin. At that same conference, speakers included two White House advisors, two sons of the US president, the son of the U.S. Commerce Secretary, and a Trump appointee to the Securities and Exchange Commission. For a cryptocurrency built on independence from big government, this was a swerve. So, what happens when the President of the United States showers his love on the crypto community ... while also becoming a crypto entrepreneur himself? We follow along as Trump Inc.'s Ilya Marritz and Andrea Bernstein spend three days at the Las Vegas conference center where convicts are cheered, oversight and regulation are booed, and the separation of crypto and state no longer applies.Find more Planet Money: Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Our weekly Newsletter.Listen free at these links: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Help support Planet Money and hear our bonus episodes by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Is NYC’s Mayoral Race All About Rent?
From 🇺🇸 The Journal, published at 2025-06-27 19:32
NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has won over legions of rent-strapped young voters with a platform focused on making housing more affordable — including by freezing rents. This week he cleared an important hurdle, winning the Democratic primary in an upset of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. But his success has panicked the New York real estate industry, which is now in a mad scramble to assess its options. WSJ’s Rebecca Picciotto explains how the city’s housing crisis is driving the election. Annie Minoff hosts.
