The "Miracle Cure"
Trigger warning: Ableism. A small moment of peace, a supposedly harmless medication – and a catastrophe, and a catastrophe that forever changes the lives of thousands of families. When, in the early 1960s, children are suddenly born without arms, legs or with severe internal damage, parents and experts are at a loss. But two men begin to research and discover: Behind the promise of gentle sleep lies a deadly danger. The biggest pharmaceutical scandal in German history is uncovered. In this episode, we tell the story of blind faith in progress, lack of state control and the long struggle of those affected for recognition, justice and a self-determined life. We speak with those who are affected and ask: What is it like to live with the consequences of a drug that should never have been sold? Expert in this episode: Bettina Ehrt, general practitioner. Further interview partners: Sigrid Kwella and Georg Löwenhauser. **Credit** Producers/ Hosts: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers Editorial staff: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers, Simon Garschhammer Editing: Pauline Korb Legal approval: Abel and colleagues **Sources (Selection)** Indictment of the Contergan trial “The man who stopped Contergan”: https://t1p.de/to0ts “Chronicle of the Contergan case”: https://t1p.de/vbn0f Information portal of the Contergan Foundation: https://t1p.de/d936t “Heidelberg Study” **Partner of the episode** Would you like to learn more about our advertising partners?
