Daniel Schreiber (2025) – How do we save love in times of hatred?

From Hotel Matze

Daniel is an author and essayist. He has written about home, sobriety, and being alone – and now about love as a political act. We conducted the conversation live in front of an audience in Leipzig. I wanted to know from him why he has perceived an ever-growing wave of hatred for several years and why he sees a political answer to it precisely in love. We talk about how his own fear and retraumatization from the 90s feels and why silence and looking away are no longer an option for him. It's about radical kindness, charity, the idea of a grand alliance against right-wing extremist and neoliberal elites, and the question of how to speak with people who hold completely different political positions. Fabian Köster - What can satire achieve?

From Hotel Matze

Fabian is a comedian, author, podcaster, and above all, a heute-show reporter. We talked live in front of an audience at the Cologne Volksbühne. I wanted to know from Fabian how he ended up on the "heute-show" so early, why Markus Söder hasn't let go of him for years, and what his secret weapon is in his job as a reporter. We talk about a very sheltered childhood in Cologne's West, poetry slam evenings in his school's auditorium, first appearances on "TV total," and what it's like when not a single gag lands at the German Comedy Award. It's about smoking weed on camera and his friendship with Lutz van der Horst, repeatedly about Markus Söder, about political sham debates, and about the question of what satire can still achieve when everyone is just screaming. #223 The three butterflies

From Mordlust

Trigger warning: This episode deals with racism, among other things. Minerva Mirabal grew up in the Dominican Republic at a time when dictator Trujillo tolerated no dissent and demanded absolute loyalty. But the young woman made no secret of her thoughts on politics and justice. When the Mirabals were invited to a ball hosted by the dictator in 1949, where he made advances towards her, that evening would change her life forever. A resistance against the regime grew within her, one that could no longer be stopped and soon extended far beyond her own family. In this episode of "Mordlust – Crimes and their Backgrounds," we talk about what it means to show courage in a system that punishes every deviation. It's about female resistance, the mechanisms of a dictatorship, power, machismo, and how three women became symbolic figures for an entire country, and how their legacy resonates internationally to this day. For the case of the Butterflies is why November 25th is now recognized as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. Experts in this episode: Political scientist Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Werz, former Chair of Comparative Government at the University of Rostock with a research focus on politics in Latin America, Prof. Dr. Barbara Potthast, Professor of Iberian and Latin American History at the University of Cologne with a focus on gender relations, and Dr. Carolin Weyand, lawyer and board member of UN Women Germany. Check-In with Philip Siefer – Is this episode also a mistake?

From Hotel Matze

In this episode, I talk with my friend Philip Siefer about mistakes – from small sloppiness to the really serious ones, which hardly anyone is allowed to talk about. We ask ourselves why our reaction to mistakes often functions like a six-year-old child: hiding, distracting, making jokes – and why fear almost always produces more mistakes. Désirée is an actress, author and entertainer - one who provokes and polarizes. I wanted to know from her how she learned to deal with her public perception, rejection and clichés. The Quack

From Mordlust

Trigger warning: This episode deals with suicide and sexualized violence, including against adolescents. Christiane is known in her small North German community like a colorful dog. She creates her pottery with a lot of passion and is always inspired by nature during her beloved walks. Together with her son and her brother, she hikes one winter across frost-covered meadows and field paths – until she suddenly collapses and can no longer take a step. A momentous diagnosis determines her everyday life from then on. Unexpectedly, Holger enters her life a little later. At first, he alleviates her pain through acupuncture, but soon he becomes the center of her life. Holger soon opens his own naturopathic practice in Christiane's house – a place that will be completely turned upside down a few years later because of a gruesome suspicion. What comes to light is a human abyss that has dragged several victims into the depths. This episode of "Mordlust – Crimes and their Backgrounds" is about a carefully constructed web of lies built up over years that would probably never have been exposed – if one person had not broken their silence and thus brought everything crashing down. **Credit** Producers/ Hosts: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers Editors: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers, Marisa Morell Editing: Pauline Korb Legal approval: Abel und Kollegen **Sources (Selection)** Judgment of the Flensburg Regional Court of June 12, 2024 - File number I Ks 106 Js 19856/22 Spiegel: https://t1p.de/2xp2h sh:z: https://t1p.de/f9rlw NDR: https://t1p.de/yb2jh **Episode Partner** Would you like to learn more about our advertising partners? Course into the eye of the storm.

From Verbrechen

A livestock carrier with 6,000 cows gets caught in a typhoon in the middle of the Pacific - and continues, straight into the eye of the storm. What sounds like a force of nature turns out to be a system of flags of convenience, time pressure and silence, in which people and animals become expendable.

Aladin El Mafaalani (2025) – What breaks our trust today?

From Hotel Matze

Sahra Wagenknecht – Who benefits from fear?

From Hotel Matze

Sahra is a politician, publicist, and co-founder of the BSW, the party named after her, “Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht” (Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance). She just came from the press conference where she explained the realignment of her party. I wanted to know from Sahra what "no retreat" exactly means, how much power a faction has, where she feels pressure on her opinion, and what she thinks is needed for Germany to become more confident again. We talk about peace and rearmament, media trust, sleep deprivation, growing piles of books, and the fact that Sahra reflects on having alienated people in the past. Betterov – Wie prägt deine Herkunft deine Kunst?

From Hotel Matze

Betterov is a musician, songwriter and, for me, one of the most exciting German-speaking artists of his generation. On his new album "Große Kunst" he tells the story of his father, who fled the GDR in 1989 – and thus also the story of an entire generation. I wanted to know from Betterov how much his background influences his art and how he decided to dedicate an album to the "Ostrelikten". We talk about origins, corporal punishment in school, violence in youth, his path from industrial mechanic to musician, about freedom, responsibility and why he prefers to sing about his father's dictatorship than to produce the next algorithm hit. It's about shame, courage, reflection and what it means when you finally understand your own story. Dot doesn't know what's been going on with her son Stephen lately. Just a few months ago, the 18-year-old was an academic high-flyer at school, popular with girls, and on track for a career in the Royal Air Force. Now he sits apathetically at the dining table. In a very short time, Stephen dropped out of school, withdrew from friends, and spends almost all his days in front of the television. The antidepressants he was prescribed don't seem to be helping. For his mother, this is a frightening mystery. Four years earlier, in 1990, veterinarian Dr. Margrit Herbst in Germany faces another mystery. What she observes at the slaughterhouses in Schleswig-Holstein at the time seems insignificant at first, but develops into a piece of the puzzle in a scandal that years later will have fatal consequences for families like Stephen's. This episode of "Mordlust - Crimes and their Backgrounds" is about people who suddenly change, about puzzling lapses, and about a woman who uncovers an international scandal. We tell how an English family and a German whistleblower fight for the truth to come to light. Experts in this episode: Dr. Christine Fast, specialist veterinarian for pathology, head of the laboratory at the Institute for New and Emerging Animal Diseases of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Greifswald; Dr. Peter Hermann, deputy medical director of the National Reference Center for Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies in Göttingen. **Credit** Producers/ Hosts: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers Editors: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers, Emeli Glaser Editing: Pauline Korb Legal approval: Abel und Kollegen **Sources (Selection)** Philip Yam: The Pathological Protein - Mad Cow, Chronic Wasting, and other deadly Prion Diseases Deutschlandfunk: https://t1p.de/h0y5n Spiegel: https://t1p.de/pk61n BBC News: https://t1p.de/jmst4 Stern: https://t1p.de/e4r5x **Episode Partner** Would you like to learn more about our advertising partners?
