SONY

From Acquired

Born in the unlikeliest of places — the terrible, wasteland-like aftermath of post WWII Japan — Sony rose to capture the imaginations (and wallets) of consumers and engineers around the world. The company produced hit after hit after hit: portable transistor radios, CDs, the Walkman, the PlayStation, DVDs, life insurance(!!)... and yet ultimately fell behind its greatest American admirer, Steve Jobs and Apple. This is the incredible story of Sony’s human and technological optimism in the face of overwhelming odds — a story that, given recent world events, remains as relevant today as ever. This episode has video! How to Build, Maintain & Repair Gut Health | Dr. Justin Sonnenburg

From Huberman Lab

My guest this episode is Dr. Justin Sonnenburg, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University. Dr. Sonnenburg’s research focuses on how microbes in our gut impact our mental and physical health and how diet and your environment shape your gut microbiome. We discuss the architecture of the gut microbiome and microbiota variability in different regions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and how these can change in response to diet, environment or genetics. We explore the early establishment of your microbiome and how your mode of delivery into the world (C-section or not) shapes your gut. We also discuss lifestyle factors that can alter your microbiome and the integral role the gut microbiome plays in communicating to other organs, including your brain. Dr. Sonnenburg details his recent clinical study, which found that diets rich in fermented foods (but not fiber) increase microbiota diversity and reduce signals of inflammation. Additionally, we examine how foods typical in Western Diets (e.g., high fat, low fiber, processed foods) can negatively impact the gut microbiome. Throughout the episode, we discuss actionable tools from peer-reviewed clinical findings that anyone can implement, regardless of budget, in order to optimize their gut microbiome and health. #444 - Mary Harrington - Modern Society Is Failing Men & Women

From Modern Wisdom

Mary Harrington is a writer and contributing editor at UnHerd. It's hard to say that either men or women have a firm place to stand right now. I wanted Mary to help me conduct a post-mortem. Expect to learn why the porn you start out watching is going to lead you down a dark rabbit hole, how the introduction of the pill lead to fewer weddings and more awkward situations for women, why men need their own spaces back, what Mary thinks about the pornification of everything, why young girls are developing tourettes from TikTok and much more... A next-generation solution to the climate crisis | Nkosilathi Nyathi

From TED Talks Daily

The climate crisis has been largely caused by irresponsible adults in developed countries, but it's the children of developing nations -- like Zimbabwean environmental activist Nkosilathi Nyathi -- that suffer from the most disastrous consequences. In a world where climate catastrophe feels almost unstoppable, we must involve everyone in finding solutions -- especially young people, who have the most at stake. "My generation has more to offer than ever before," Nyathi says. "We live climate change in a way our parents' generation did not."Learn more about our flagship conference happening this April at attend.ted.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. What seaweed and cow burps have to do with climate action | Ermias Kebreab

From TED Talks Daily

Scientists have long known that cows are a huge source of the greenhouse gas methane, contributing up to four percent of emissions globally. But could there be a way to make cattle less -- ahem -- gassy? Animal scientist Ermias Kebreab talks through an ingenious solution to reduce methane-rich cow burps by feeding cattle something growing below the surface of the ocean: seaweed.Learn more about our flagship conference happening this April at attend.ted.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. Rapid Response: Make mistakes to make progress, w/GM's Gerald Johnson

From Masters of Scale

General Motors’ Gerald Johnson shares the process and progress of trying to accomplish two daunting goals: an all-electric vehicle future, and to become the world’s most inclusive company. One thing that Johnson, the Executive Vice President of manufacturing and sustainability, has learned: “If you're not making mistakes, you're not making progress.” He adds that progress requires us to embrace being uncomfortable — and to learn from it. Jake Hanrahan is a conflict journalist, documentary filmmaker and the founder of Popular Front. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going for a week but it's felt like a year. Social media, YouTube and news channels have been awash with stories from on the ground and even the Wikipedia page has had over 500 contributors and is more than 20,000 words long. I wanted to find out what life is actually like on the ground in Ukraine from someone who's been there. Expect to learn what protection the Ukrainian citizens have access to from bombings, where civilians are getting all their guns from, how you coordinate citizen-militias with zero military training, whether world champion boxers are are actually helping the effort, how skeptical Jake is of the press coverage, how many Russians actually want this war and much more...
