Robinhood CEO: Making Everyone An Owner

From a16z Podcast

Vlad Tenev built Robinhood by breaking every rule Wall Street wrote: zero commissions when competitors charged $10, mobile-first when "serious" investors demanded desktop, a brand that made finance feel like rebellion instead of a club you'd never join. By 2021 they'd forced every major brokerage to slash fees and attracted millions who'd never owned a stock, but then GameStop happened: trading restrictions during the meme stock frenzy triggered congressional hearings, user fury, and a two-year brand crisis that nearly buried them despite the real culprit being antiquated clearing mechanics no one understood. Now Tenev's pushing an even more radical vision—tokenizing private company shares so retail investors can own stakes in AI giants before IPO, turning prediction markets into "truth machines" that beat polls and pundits, and building what he calls the end of financial nihilism: a platform where your seventy-year-old parents and your Gen Z cousin both manage everything from retirement accounts to election bets in one place. The question isn't whether traditional finance survives this; it's whether Robinhood can move fast enough to own the entire wealth transfer before someone else does.

244. Community Creates Change: Build Relationships That Actually Matter

Why community is the most powerful tool for transformation.Community isn't just a feel-good buzzword. According to Gina Bianchini, it's a catalyst for personal and collective transformation.Bianchini is the CEO and founder of community-building platform, Mighty Networks, and author of the book Purpose: Design a Community and Change Your Life. "Community is when people come together, and every single member has something to give and something to receive," she explains. In contrast to the one-directional dynamic of a speaker and their audience or a creator and their following, Bianchini argues that the power of community lies in two-way exchanges, where each member benefits the group and benefits from it. "Community is the single most effective way to get results and transformation you just can't get on your own," she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Bianchini joins host Matt Abrahams to discuss how to unlock the potential of purposeful communities. She shares strategies for finding your tribe during times of transition, the "people magic” created when we facilitate deep connections, and how creating community enables us to create the world and lives we imagine. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Gina BianchiniGina’s Book: PurposeEp.174 Fix Meetings: Transform Gatherings Into Meaningful Moments Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> [email protected] Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:15) - Defining Community vs. Audience (04:03) - Community as a Catalyst for Transformation (06:39) - Finding the Right Community (10:27) - The Future Story Framework (13:20) - People Magic & Facilitation (18:59) - The Final Three Questions (24:51) - Conclusion   ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost.Strawberry.me. Can Community Banks Survive the Next SVB? | ModernFi CEO Paolo Bertolotti and Former Comptroller Gene Ludwig

From a16z Podcast

The former bank regulator who invented deposit networks just revealed why SVB's collapse was inevitable—and why the solution that could have saved them is finally being rebuilt. Gene Ludwig ran the OCC during the Clinton administration, created a half-trillion-dollar market solving a problem his Aunt Betty faced riding buses between banks, then watched his invention fail to save Silicon Valley Bank because the technology, economics, and incentives were fundamentally broken. Now he's partnered with Paolo and ModernFi to build what could become America's eighth systemically important financial utility: a bank-owned consortium that's signing 25 institutions per week and racing to protect the 4.8 trillion in uninsured deposits that make the next crisis inevitable.

Essentials: Science of Building Strong Social Bonds with Family, Friends & Romantic Partners

From Huberman Lab

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I discuss the science of social connection and how we form meaningful bonds with others. I explore the neural basis for "social homeostasis"—our drive for a certain amount of social interaction—which explains why we feel lonely, seek connection and how we navigate social hierarchies. I also explain how the brain and neurochemicals, such as oxytocin and dopamine, shape our relationships from infancy through adulthood and underlie traits like introversion and extroversion. The episode also offers practical insights into forming deeper connections and how shared experiences with others enhance social bonding. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. ⚡️ 10x AI Engineers with $1m Salaries — Alex Lieberman & Arman Hezarkhani, Tenex

From Latent Space: The AI Engineer Podcast

Alex Lieberman and Arman Hezarkani, co-founders of Tenex, reveal how they're revolutionizing software consulting by compensating AI engineers for output rather than hours—enabling some engineers to earn over $1 million annually while delivering 10x productivity gains. Their company represents a fundamental rethinking of knowledge work compensation in the age of AI agents, where traditional hourly billing models perversely incentivize slower work even as AI tools enable unprecedented speed. The Genesis: From 90% Downsizing to 10x Output The story behind 10X begins with Arman's previous company, Parthian, where he was forced to downsize his engineering team by 90%. Rather than collapse, Arman re-architected the entire product and engineering process to be AI-first—and discovered that production-ready software output increased 10x despite the massive headcount reduction. This counterintuitive result exposed a fundamental misalignment: engineers compensated by the hour are disincentivized from leveraging AI to work faster, even when the technology enables dramatic productivity gains. Alex, who had invested in Parthian, initially didn't believe the numbers until Arman walked him through why LLMs have made such a profound impact specifically on engineering as knowledge work. The Economic Model: Story Points Over Hours 10X's core innovation is compensating engineers based on story points—units of completed, quality output—rather than hours worked. This creates direct economic incentives for engineers to adopt every new AI tool, optimize their workflows, and maximize throughput. The company expects multiple engineers to earn over $1 million in cash compensation next year purely from story point earnings. To prevent gaming the system, they hire for two profiles: engineers who are "long-term selfish" (understanding that inflating story points will destroy client relationships) and those who genuinely love writing code and working with smart people. They also employ technical strategists incentivized on client retention (NRR) who serve as the final quality gate before any engineering plan reaches a client. Impressive Builds: From Retail AI to App Store Hits The results speak for themselves. In one project, 10X built a computer vision system for retail cameras that provides heat maps, queue detection, shelf stocking analysis, and theft detection—creating early prototypes in just two weeks for work that previously took quarters. They built Snapback Sports' mobile trivia app in one month, which hit 20th globally on the App Store. In a sales context, an engineer spent four hours building a working prototype of a fitness influencer's AI health coach app after the prospect initially said no—immediately moving 10X to the top of their vendor list. These examples demonstrate how AI-enabled speed fundamentally changes sales motions and product development timelines. The Interview Process: Unreasonably Difficult Take-Homes Despite concerns that AI would make take-home assessments obsolete, 10X still uses them—but makes them "unreasonably difficult." About 50% of candidates don't even respond, but those who complete the challenge demonstrate the caliber needed. The interview process is remarkably short: two calls before the take-home, review, then one or two final meetings—completable in as little as a week. A signature question: "If you had infinite resources to build an AI that could replace either of us on this call, what would be the first major bottleneck?" The sophisticated answer isn't just "model intelligence" or "context length"—it's controlling entropy, the accumulating error rate that derails autonomous agents over time. The Limiting Factor: Human Capital, Not Technology Despite being an AI-first company, 10X's primary constraint is human capital—finding and hiring enough exceptional engineers fast enough, then matching them with the right processes to maintain delivery quality as they scale. The company has ambitions beyond consulting to build their own technology, but for the foreseeable future, recruiting remains the bottleneck. This reveals an important insight about the AI era: even as technology enables unprecedented leverage, the constraint shifts to finding people who can harness that leverage effectively. Ari Emanuel - The Anti-AI Bet

My guest today is Ari Emanuel. Ari runs one of the most influential portfolios in global sports, entertainment, and media. He oversees TKO, which includes the UFC and WWE, serves as the Executive Chairman of WME Group, and recently founded MARI, a new company focused on global events and live experiences. At the center of this conversation is Ari's anti-AI bet: as AI makes digital content cheaper and everyday work more automated, he believes the value will increasingly concentrate in live and physical experiences. He explains how he’s building his portfolio around that belief, what defines a great live experience, and how he thinks about AI’s impact on content and IP. Ari is best known as a dealmaker, and he shares the principles behind his success – relentless follow-up, over-communication, velocity, and an obsession with making things happen – and how those things become the operating system he uses today.
