In this episode of "Book Report," I invite you to the second part of the American diptych – a story about The Great Gatsby, or rather, I should say "That Great Gatsby," because that is the title of the new translation of Francis Scott Fitzgerald's most famous work. The Great Gatsby is one of the most present literary figures in pop culture. But has this enormous popularity of Fitzgerald's hero contributed to a general understanding of this multidimensional, enigmatic novel? A novel that – although volumetrically modest – with its literary scope constantly provokes new readings. None of the characters in "That Great Gatsby" are easy to decipher. The enigmatic narrator leads the reader to the borders of the world of reality and unreality. It is a novel about America in the 1920s, about great dreams and great aspirations. About a world ruled by money, but not every penny is a ticket to the American dream. Because, contrary to the declarations of the Founding Fathers, in America freedom and equality are only given to the chosen few. Or maybe "That Great Gatsby" is not just a novel about America? Perhaps Fitzgerald's most important prophecy concerns the hell that was to break out in Europe in the third and fourth decades of the 20th century? Gatsby also tells a timeless story about the desire for love and the attempt to regain the past, as well as about great loneliness. Fitzgerald is a complex and very ambiguous figure.
