The ultimate threat to Enel in SPFrom 🇧🇷 O Assunto, published at 2025-12-18 03:16
Guests: Léo Arcoverde, GloboNews reporter; and Joísa Dutra, FGV do Rio professor and former Aneel director. More than 2.2 million properties lost power in São Paulo after a storm with winds of over 90 km/h hit the city. Hundreds of trees fell and hit the power grid, under the responsibility of Enel - the concessionaire providing energy to the capital and cities in Greater São Paulo. The episode brought to light an old problem – since 2020, Enel has already received R$ 374 million in fines applied by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) due to poor service provision. After yet another episode in which millions of people lost power and hundreds of millions of reais in losses, a meeting between federal, state, and municipal governments decided to initiate the process of terminating the contract with Enel. In a conversation with Natuza Nery, GloboNews reporter Léo Arcoverde explains how the company reached a critical point in service provision in São Paulo. He recalls the November 2023 blackout, when millions of people lost power – in some areas, the lack of supply lasted a week. He details the difference between intervention and forfeiture processes and explains what Enel claims to justify the blackouts. Afterwards, Natuza welcomes Joísa Dutra, FGV do Rio professor and director of the Center for Regulation in Infrastructure at the same institution, FGV CERI. Joísa, who was an Aneel director between 2005 and 2009, explains how contract termination processes with energy concessionaires work. She also answers what could happen to Enel and what guarantees customers have with the prospect of the concession ending.

In the mid-19th century, the California "Gold Rush" caused a mass abandonment of workplaces and created a severe shortage of labor. In Israel of 2025, there is no gold, but the crisis is the same: empty garages, buses that don't arrive, and restaurants closing entire sections. This time, we are with Maayan Parthey and Prof. Gil Epstein, a lecturer in economics at Bar-Ilan University and a senior researcher at the Taub Center, trying to understand where the workers have disappeared to?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Crime Crisis In America and How Technology Fixes ItFrom 🇺🇸 a16z Podcast, published at 2025-12-17 15:51
What if America tried to eliminate crime instead of just reacting to it? Not with slogans, but with staffing, technology, and strategy scaled to the problem. In this episode, Erik Torenberg speaks with Garrett Langley, founder and CEO of Flock Safety, and Ben Horowitz, cofounder of a16z, about what is happening in the cities that are trying. Flock now works with over 5,000 communities to detect crime, recover missing children, and close cases faster than ever. Ben has been closely involved in Las Vegas, where Flock technology, drones, and community policing have raised clearance rates while reducing use of force. They outline what a real national crime-reduction strategy could look like: solving the police staffing crisis, using intelligence to make policing safer, understanding why clearance rates have collapsed, and how public–private partnerships are filling gaps cities cannot. They also tackle the hard questions around privacy, criminal justice failures, and the hidden role of organized crime in everyday offenses.
