    【华盛顿不明白中国】林培瑞:美国为什么总是搞不懂中国?

    From 🇨🇳 不明白播客, published at 2025-11-07 23:00

For a long time, the Western world, including the United States, has seemed unable to understand China. Many years ago, intellectuals such as Liu Xiaobo and Fang Lizhi raised similar questions. Liu Xiaobo said: "Foreigners don't understand China, not because of insufficient IQ, but because they are too straightforward to keep up with the devious minds of the Chinese." Fang Lizhi believed that Western culture always has a "double standard" when it comes to human rights issues. As a famous sinologist who has maintained close contact with Chinese society for a long time, how does Professor Perry Link view the Western world's misunderstanding of China? At the second Bumingbai Festival, we talked about his new article: "Scratching the Surface: China Hands." Why does the United States always misunderstand China? What mistakes have Western China experts made? How are "China experts" affected by language barriers, the Chinese bureaucratic system, and Washington's evaluation system? How does this environment affect US policy towards China and Chinese studies? We also talked about why he is so persistent in criticizing this. Perry Link mentioned the urgency of age and the responsibility of a professor, "A professor's tenure is not a reward, but to give you the freedom to speak the truth." Timeline: 00:00 Crosstalk performance 10:28 "Scratching the Surface: China Hands," and Liu Xiaobo's saying "Foreigners don't understand China" 15:17 Western double standards: sometimes demonizing China, sometimes idealizing it 17:01 How does the US government's personnel system affect its China policy? 20:41 If you only focus on Zhongnanhai, what aspects of Chinese politics will you ignore? 23:03 Examples of American experts applying Western experience to China, but getting the opposite result 26:00 When China experts no longer use truth as the standard, but pursue remarks that Washington likes 30:33 Akio Yasuko and Perry Link have both been called "anti-China scholars" 33:11 What impact will it have if scholars don't pay attention to the Chinese people and ordinary people? 36:29 Why is the voice of scratching the surface always the most popular? And rarely reflected on? 41:23 Why does Perry Link want to speak out in criticism? 46:11 Q&A: How can one understand the United States without scratching the surface? 47:55 Q&A: How do you view China's democratic process? And "Wish Professor Link good health forever" Related Links: [Bumingbai Festival] EP-107 Perry Link: Why Xi Jinping Cannot Bring Chinese Society Back to the Mao Era Guest Opinion - Perry Link: Scratching the Surface China Hands Hosted on Acast. The US Treasury would have benefited in the short term with aid to Argentina.

    From 🇦🇷 Cara o Ceca, published at 2025-11-07 18:00

A Central Bank report revealed that the US Treasury would have sold the pesos it bought in October in the electoral run-up to support the Argentine currency. The operation, initially seen as a gesture of financial support, was reversed after the elections, raising doubts about the true scope of the agreement with Washington. "The operation maintained the exchange rate bands established by the Central Bank –BCRA– through a loan, but then the Treasury took the dollars and the Central Bank is left with a debt of some 2 billion dollars, which would be from the activation of the swap," said Christian Buteler, an Argentine economist, in Cara o Ceca. "The operation guarantees the Treasury the profit from having intervened in the market in the other weeks. If it had gone to the market, the price would have risen and, surely, it would have bought more expensively than it sold, that is, it would have lost money," he concluded. Kazakhstan joined the Abraham Accords The decision was confirmed by the country's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a meeting with US President Donald Trump. This agreement aims to normalize Israel's relations with countries in the Arab and Muslim world. "In regional terms, Kazakhstan is not very important on the Middle East board. The most significant thing is that it is a country of the former Soviet Union. It is one more gesture towards Donald Trump," said Martín Schapiro, lawyer and international analyst, in Cara o Ceca.

The Macabre Case of Doña Elvia (and other horror stories)

From 🇲🇽 Relatos de la Noche, published at 2025-11-07 15:41

In this episode of Tales of the Night, we will delve into three very different experiences, but united by something that is always present in these stories: what moves silently when no one is expecting it. We will travel to Nicaragua, where a young man's encounter with one of the feared "witch monkeys" completely breaks the border between legends and reality. A crouching shadow, a silence that weighs, and a roof that shouldn't sound at that time of night. The second story takes us to a room barely lit by the early morning light, where a tired daughter discovers that perhaps her mother was not as alone as she thought. Among dust, light and impossible figures, she will understand that there are presences that do not come to scare... but to accompany. And finally, we will learn about the most disturbing case of the episode: the story of Doña Elvia, a woman whose life was marked by an impossible wish... and by something that always accompanied her from the shadows. Testimonials, documents, and an ending that still haunts those who lived it. Three different stories, three ways of understanding the paranormal, and a single invitation: turn off the light, get comfortable, and let these voices accompany you tonight. --- 📖 You can now get our book in physical and digital bookstores. Amjad Masad & Adam D’Angelo: How Far Are We From AGI?

    From 🇺🇸 a16z Podcast, published at 2025-11-07 11:00

Adam D’Angelo (Quora/Poe) thinks we're 5 years from automating remote work. Amjad Masad (Replit) thinks we're brute-forcing intelligence without understanding it. In this conversation, two technical founders who are building the AI future disagree on almost everything: whether LLMs are hitting limits, if we're anywhere close to AGI, and what happens when entry-level jobs disappear but experts remain irreplaceable. They dig into the uncomfortable reality that AI might create a "missing middle" in the job market, why everyone in SF is suddenly too focused on getting rich to do weird experiments, and whether consciousness research has been abandoned for prompt engineering. Plus: Why coding agents can now run for 20+ hours straight, the return of the "sovereign individual" thesis, and the surprising sophistication of everyday users juggling multiple AIs.
