Raport o książkach – Colm Tóibín
Colm Tóibín – one of the most outstanding and beloved contemporary Irish writers – will talk in this episode of Report on Books about how his novels are created. Sometimes it resembles the work of a composer who has to reduce symphonic music to the chamber sound of strings. An idea or vision may surprise the writer in the middle of the street, but then a laborious process awaits him of making decisions about the sound and meaning of each subsequent sentence. Colm Tóibín will also talk about when an author feels the need to revisit the heroine of his book. In the novel "Brooklyn," Eilis Lacey left her hometown in Ireland for America in her early twenties. In the next one, titled "Long Island," the heroine, 25 years older, returns home. "Brooklyn" and "Long Island" are poignant novels about the experience of Irish and Italian immigrants settling in New York in the second half of the 20th century, about searching for identity, cutting off roots, loneliness, and eternal drifting.
