It's mid-summer, and this is Report on the World's off-season, we invite you to the lake — in the best company. The guest of this episode is a pioneer of wild, adventure swimming in cold water and a multiple record holder in this field. - as the first person in the world, he swam the Ice Mile near Spitsbergen Island in the Arctic. - he took part in the first 1 km race in history off the coast of Antarctica, in water with a temperature of -1.2 degrees Celsius. - he swam the entire Vistula in stages. - as the first person, he swam 250 km along the Yukon River in Alaska — in less than 5 days. When John Hersey went to Hiroshima, he was a 30-year-old reporter. Did he suspect that the text he was writing for The New Yorker would be hailed as the most important report of the 20th century, and that Albert Einstein would run from kiosk to kiosk to collect as many copies of this now-historic issue as possible? When Hersey was writing his report, Americans knew about the two atomic bombs that fell on two Japanese cities – first Hiroshima, then Nagasaki. There was a lot of talk about the triumph of American science, about how the attack on Japan helped end World War II. But nothing was said about the people who were victims of this event. The Hiroshima report made not only Americans, but also readers around the world, aware of the previously unimaginable scale of destruction and human suffering caused by the use of atomic weapons. He told the story of six city residents who survived - a story that is still relevant today. W Ukraine odbyły się największe od początku wojny demonstracje przeciw władzy. Na ulicach Kijowa i innych miast tysiące ludzi sprzeciwiało się decyzji o oddaniu nadzoru nad Narodowym Biurem Antykorupcyjnym w ręce kontrolowanego politycznie prokuratora generalnego. He became a performer and composer, and when the civil war was already underway, he came to Poland. In Krakow, he created a choir of non-professionals, which "after hours" is a group of good friends. And when Bashar al-Assad's regime fell in Syria, he visited Damascus, his hometown, for the first time in over a decade. We talk about the sounds of Syria, whether Poles can sing, and music that can connect very different people. We start the off-season with a meeting with an outstanding director whose latest film ostensibly tells about the 20th century through the history of trains. But it is not a film about technology, about overcoming space, or about fascinating journeys and views behind the glass. It is a film about man in the 20th century — a great metaphor for human fate, told in the form of a film symphony, composed of archival materials, moving music and reconstructed sounds. The film we will talk about today is a great affirmation of artistic freedom, and the message that flows from it is not pleasant and optimistic, but extremely moving.
