    Reed Hastings - Building Netflix

From 🇺🇸 Invest Like the Best with Patrick O'Shaughnessy, published at 2026-01-06 09:00

My guest today is Reed Hastings, the co-founder and former longtime CEO of Netflix. Netflix is an example of two ideas that everyone talks about, but are extremely hard to do in practice. The first is finding a simple idea and taking it extraordinarily seriously. Reed talks about how even the DVD business was nothing more than a stepping stone toward streaming, which they envisioned from the company’s inception in 1997. The second is talent density, and what it actually takes to set and sustain an exceptionally high bar over decades as a company grows.  We talk about how those ideas shaped Netflix’s culture and strategy, what Reed learned from mistakes like Qwikster, and why Netflix treated content like a venture portfolio. We also discuss Reed’s work today. He shares how he’s thinking about AI, what he’s learned from serving on the boards of Microsoft, Meta, Anthropic, and Bloomberg, and what excites him about Powder Mountain, the ski resort he acquired after Netflix. Please enjoy my conversation with Reed Hastings. Book Report – Justyna Sobolewska "Book about (non)reading"

From 🇵🇱 Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka, published at 2026-01-06 07:00

In the first episode of the Books Report in 2026, we won't be in a hurry, because literature has its own rhythm, which means that some books are better read long after their publication. There are also those we'll never get around to reading... what can I say, those are the most numerous. So maybe instead of feeling guilty about the unread books piling up on our shelves, we should look at them with tenderness, like old acquaintances with whom we never really managed to become close friends, but it's good that they exist.Because books are not just carriers of great literary content, but also objects with which we share space. Sometimes they remind us of who we were or who we dreamed of being, other times they bear the traces of our reading habits, travels, acquaintances with other people. And the inspiration for all these reflections on the nature of books and reading was provided by Justyna Sobolewska's "Book on (Un)reading," who is the guest of this episode.Host: Agata KasprolewiczGuest: Justyna SobolewskaBook: "Book on (Un)reading" by Justyna Sobolewska / Iskry Publishing HouseProduction: Kris Wawrzak and Marcin Trojanowicz---------------------------------------------The Report on the State of the World is a broadcast that exists thanks to our Patrons, join the fundraising ➡️ https://patronite.pl/DariuszRosiakSubscribe to the Report on the State of the World newsletter ➡️ https://dariuszrosiak.substack.comReport T-shirts and mugs ➡️ https://patronite-sklep.pl/kolekcja/raport-o-stanie-swiata/ [Self-promotion]

    Was Maduro's Capture About Oil?

From 🇺🇸 The Journal, published at 2026-01-05 22:15

For months, the U.S. sold its pressure campaign against Venezuela as a way to curtail drug trafficking. But WSJ’s Collin Eaton explains why getting companies to flock back to Venezuela will be a massive challenge. Ryan Knutson hosts. Report on the State of the World - January 5, 2025

From 🇵🇱 Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka, published at 2026-01-05 21:47

The United States captured and transported Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores to New York. The military operation, prepared over several months, involved 150 aircraft that destroyed military targets in Caracas. At least several dozen people died.Maduro was transported to New York; on Monday, he is scheduled to appear in court on charges of narcoterrorism, cocaine importation, possession of machine guns prohibited in the US, and attempted use of them.In Venezuela, power was taken over by the current Vice President Delcy Rodríguez. The authorities announce the defense of the country against imperial aggression – as it was put – while Rodríguez adopted a conciliatory tone, proposing an agreement with the Americans within the framework of international law.President Trump announced that the United States would manage Venezuela, although he did not explain how this would happen. Trump also declared that Americans would take over Venezuela's oil reserves. What is the purpose of the American intervention in Venezuela? Why is it happening? How do Americans intend to manage the country, especially the oil industry? What role do they see for the current authorities and for the opposition? What will be the consequences of the American operation for world politics, and how are China and Russia reacting to it? Does Trump have any plan for Venezuela? And why is the president, who came to power promising to withdraw America from wars around the world, initiating a second consecutive intervention a few months before the elections?Guests: Joanna Gocłowska-Bolek, Marcin Fatalski, Piotr Arak---------------------------------------------The "Raport o stanie świata" (Report on the State of the World) is a broadcast that exists thanks to our Patrons, join the fundraiser ➡️ https://patronite.pl/DariuszRosiakSubscribe to the "Raport o stanie świata" newsletter ➡️ https://dariuszrosiak.substack.com"Raport" t-shirts and mugs ➡️ https://patronite-sklep.pl/kolekcja/raport-o-stanie-swiata/ [Self-promotion]

Maduro before New York Justice: "The US wants to send a message that the world belongs to them"

    From 🇦🇷 Cara o Ceca, published at 2026-01-05 18:40

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, appeared before the Federal Court of New York, after having been captured last Saturday the 3rd in Caracas. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, remain detained in a Brooklyn jail. "I am dismayed by the situation. The Venezuelan people have resisted for more than 20 years. I remember what happened in 2002 with the coup d'état that Hugo Chavez suffered and the people who went to support him. This time the US made highly sophisticated moves and kidnapped the president," said Alicia Castro, an Argentine diplomat, former ambassador to Venezuela and the United Kingdom, on Cara o Ceca. "There is no evidence of drug trafficking in Venezuela, nor links with Maduro. The US wants to send its message that the world belongs to them; they seek to find culprits in Venezuela to justify their actions. Donald Trump explicitly said that the country must return the oil to him when it is a nationalized product," she added. Sergio Rodríguez Gelfenstein, an international analyst and Venezuelan university professor, stated from Caracas that "the country is calm but a tension and uncertainty are felt given the threat of a new attack by the US."
